John 13:34
Racial discrimination and inequality remain a formidable barrier to quality education, employment, housing, health care, and equal justice under the law in throughout the nation.
As Episcopalians, we are called to reconciliation, the spiritual practice of seeking loving, liberating, and life-giving relationships with God and one another, and striving to heal and transform injustice and brokenness in ourselves, our communities, institutions, and society. As the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so eloquently put it: “The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community.”
The Diocesan Anti-Racism Commission (ARC) was formed in 2005 with a mandate to foster systemic and institutional changes that help move people away from the sin of racism and toward our Gospel and Baptismal values of justice and dignity for all people. In those 20 years, hundreds of diocesan clergy and lay people have participated in ARC’s anti-racism workshops, as well as Racial Healing Circles for African Americans, Telling our Stories performances using playback theater, and workshops on singing African American spirituals with integrity.
