"Die Schöne Müllerin" is a love story. Schubert's most beautiful and heartfelt music tells of a young man's unrequited longing for the daughter of the owner of the mill where he has found work. Much of the song cycle's poetic and musical imagery derives from the movement of water, sometimes tranquil and other times turbulent.
