Churches Ring Bells to Recognize 400 Years of Slavery

This coming Sunday, August 25, at 3 p.m. Episcopal churches across the country and in our area will ring their bells for one minute to remember and honor the first enslaved Africans who landed in English North America in 1619 by tolling their bells for one minute on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 3:00 pm.

Below is a breakdown by county of which churches are participating. (*One of the churches below is the first African Episcopal Church in the country founded in 1792.)

Bucks County

• Doylestown: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 84 E. Oakland Ave., Doylestown
• New Hope: St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 10 Chapel Rd., New Hope
• Yardley: St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 47 W. Afton Ave., Yardley

Chester County

• Oxford: St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford (They do not have a steeple but will be ringing bells outside.)
• Valley Forge: Washington Memorial Chapel, Route 23 at Valley Forge National Historical Park, Valley Forge

Delaware County

• Prospect Park: St. James Episcopal Church, 732 11th Ave., Prospect Park (The congregation from St. John’s the Evangelist in Essington will also join in handbell ringing and observing a moment of silence as well.)
• Swarthmore: Trinity Episcopal Church, 301 N. Chester Rd., Swarthmore

Montgomery County
