Liturgical Workshop on Praying the Hours

This event has been POSTPONED

Sep 24, 2008 | 10-4pm | Philadelphia Cathedral

Christians have always prayerfully observed the daily transitions of time: pre-dawn, morning, noon, evening, and night. These have been celebrated in monasteries, cathedrals, parish churches and in the homes of believers throughout the ages as the church remembered the sacred nature of time and history, light and darkness. The power and prayer of these moments is largely lost to our culture.

On September 24, 2008, the Philadelphia Liturgy Institute will join with the Bucks Deanery of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania to offer a day long workshop on the celebration of Morning and Evening Prayer at the Philadelphia Cathedral at 3723 Chestnut Street, near the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

Our presenters will be Rev. Andrew Ciferni, O. Praem. from Daylesford Abbey in Paoli and Rev. Patrick Malloy the rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Allentown. Both of our speakers are well known liturgical scholars, authors and consultants on matters of worship. They will address such topics as the history of the hours, the cathedral and monastic observances of the hours, ecumenical initiatives in these celebrations, and the elements of worship (such as light, movement and music) that can enhance our prayer.

The day will conclude with a celebration of Evening Prayer incorporating some of the points discussed throughout the day.

Coffee and registrations will begin at 9:30 AM and our first session will begin promptly at 10:00. There will be ample time for informal discussions throughout the day. Evening Prayer will end around 4:00 PM, and a simple lunch will be available.

The cost of the day is $65.

Registrations can be made by calling Peter Pearson at Saint Philip’s in New Hope, PA at (215) 862-5782 or by email at . Please don't hesitate to contact him with any questions. We look forward to sharing this powerful experience with you.
