Many people find themselves drawn to the images of Byzantine iconography which are described as prayer rendered with color. Saint Philip’s invites you to learn about this sacred art from a master iconographer who is also our priest. Peter Pearson has been painting icons for nearly forty years, has been teaching for twenty years, and is the author of “A Brush With God: An Icon Workbook,” which offers technical, spiritual, and historical information about Byzantine icons specifically geared for Western readers. Each student will complete an icon to take home. This class is open to beginners; no art background is required. (Limited to 16 participants.)

Brother Yun is a Chinese preacher and evangelist whose life has been marked by both hardships and miracles through his intense desire to reach China with the gospel throughout the late 20th century. He is also a leader of the "Back to Jerusalem Movement" which seeks to send thousands of missionaries out from China into the least-gospel-reached countries of the world, most existing between China and Israel. He now lives in Germany and is married to Deling and has two children.

Come join us for this special, monthly Jazz Mass (excluding Summer months). The Jazz Masses at St. John's feature an eclectic mix of jazz and gospel-style music. The service starts at 5 pm -- the musical prelude begins at 4:50 pm. The congregation listens to instrumental and vocal selections, and join in singing jazz-flavored familiar hymns and contemporary worship songs. The liturgy, created by Father Ken, follows the form of the traditional Anglican Mass, but is contemporary in wording and style. Welcome to the Twenty-ninth Annual National Acolyte Festival at Washington National Cathedral, which will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Festival Service of Holy Eucharist with Rededication of Acolytes will occur at 10 am, followed by optional lunch and a variety of workshops and tours.

On behalf of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and the Washington National Cathedral, we encourage your registration for this year’s festival. Please bring processional crosses, banners, torches, thuribles, flags, and other liturgical items for the festive procession of acolytes. If your congregation has a liturgical dance troupe, they are also invited to take part in this procession. Plan to stay for lunch on the grounds before enjoying the afternoon’s workshops.

Peter Pearson has been painting icons for nearly forty years, has been teaching for twenty years, and is the author of “A Brush With God: An Icon Workbook,” which offers technical, spiritual, and historical information about Byzantine icons specifically geared for Western readers. It is important to share that 39 men from St. Mark's have laid down their lives for us through our 175 year history on battlefields foreign and domestic.

It will be an honor to participate at this event. There will be an offering collected which has been designated to fund the purchase and installation of a memorial sign in front of our church for the 39.
